THANE: Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has plans to deploy staff to assist the forest department and ensure no more encroachments are reported along the Parsik hillslopes in Kalwa.
The decision comes after an eight-year-old girl suffered minor injuries following a minor landslide reported along the Parsik hills at Gholai Nagar, Kalwa, in the wee hours of Wednesday. As many as six houses suffered damage but luckily there was no loss of life.
According to Shankar Patole, assistant municipal commissioner at Kalwa ward, the incident was reported around 3 am when a small cache of mud slid off the Parsik hill slopes and tumbled down on the hutments in the Jeevan deep chawl beneath.
The Chauhan family that was sleeping in one of the shanties were rudely awakened by the noise as few boulders crashed through their asbestos roof and injured their young daughter who was sleeping. Immediately, the panicked families raised an alarm following which residents evacuated their hutments and descended the hills to safer place.
A team of municipal officials rushed to the spot long with forest officials and pulled down the damaged structures to ensure residents didn’t go back. “The portion of the hillock where the soil seemed loosed was removed to avoid any possible landslide as there are hundreds of shanties in the vicinity,” said Patole.
Incidentally, the spot is in close proximity to the area where a landslide was reported last month claiming five lives. Locals said there seem to be no lessons learnt from the July incident and irrespective of several warnings, residents continue to risk their lives and stay in such dangerous conditions.
“We will deploy staff along with the forest teams to ensure there are no further encroachments here,” said Patole.
