Chandigarh, Aug 3 Retired DGP Punjab SM Sharma struck double gold in the events of men’s singles (70+) and men’s doubles (60+) in the World Police and Fire Games (WPFG-23) in Winnipeg, Canada.
In the singles semifinals, Sharma defeated a Hungarian player, Jozsef Juhasz, in straight sets 6-1, 6-1, and in the finals, he overpowered the challenge of Indian player Sastry Krishnamurthy 3-0(conceded), who developed cramps during the game and had to concede the match.
In the men’s doubles final, Sharma and his Indian partner Srinivas Reddy defeated the American pair of Robert Schaffner and Victor Beard in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
This is a hat trick for Sharma to win a gold medal in singles in the last three WPFG, first in Chengdu, China, in 2019, second in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 2022, and third this time in Winnipeg, Canada.
WPFG are conducted once every two years, but the version for 2021 was postponed by a year due to COVID.
SM Sharma has also been selected for the National team of Super Seniors (70+) to represent India in the World Super seniors Tennis Team Championship, which will be held in Mallorca,Spain, in the month of October this year.
Sharma is currently Vice President of the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA), and in this capacity he also takes keen interest in the development of tennis among youngsters in Chandigarh.
