“Italy Joins Axiom Space’s Project to Build Space Station and Modules”
Italy has confirmed its involvement in the Axiom Space project aimed at constructing a commercial space station. The Chigi Palace announced that Italy will contribute habitation modules manufactured by Thales Alenia Space Italia, a renowned expert in this field, for a segment of the new station.
Additionally, Italy will take part in Axiom Space’s Ax-3 mission scheduled for January 10, 2024, where Italian Air Force Colonel Walter Villadei will pilot the mission and conduct scientific experiments during a 14-day stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
Axiom Space, entrusted by NASA for the development and management of the commercial space station, intends to launch the first module into low-Earth orbit in 2026. This station is expected to initially be an extension of the ISS before operating independently, providing services to NASA and supporting commercial activities in low orbit. Thales Alenia Space is already involved in constructing the primary structures for the Axiom Station’s first module.
