China’s First Fourth-Generation Nuclear Power Plant Now Running for Public Use
China has launched its advanced Shidaowan high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) nuclear power plant in Shandong Province. This groundbreaking project, solely developed in China, represents a significant achievement in nuclear power technology.
The HTGR is an innovative type of reactor, a major advancement in nuclear power, designed by China Huaneng Group, Tsinghua University, and China National Nuclear Corporation.
One of its key features is safety. This reactor can remain safe and avoid dangerous situations like meltdowns or leaks of radioactive materials, even if cooling systems fail completely, without needing immediate human intervention, explained Zhang Zuoyi, the chief designer.
Over 500 companies participated in its development, with more than 90% of the plant’s equipment made locally, showcasing China’s expertise in this field.
The operation of this nuclear power plant marks a milestone in China’s nuclear power development. It not only enhances safety measures but also demonstrates the nation’s advancements in science, technology, and innovation.
